We are breathing and relaxing and trying hard to be distracted. I’m having a slow labor. There is nothing wrong with this, except that it plays with your head and the heads of everyone who is following along on this journey.
Our culture isn’t really built for unpredictability and patience, especially doctors and hospitals. It is hard to sit back and wait. To let nature take its course. To surrender control. But if the goal is an unmedicated, natural birth, then doing all of these things is essential.
So, we wait. We let go of our egos and we wait. It will not be the only time in this motherhood and fatherhood adventure that patience will be our strongest virtue. We may as well get good practice, now.
